The reviews are in before Gears of War: E-Day hits on Tuesday, October 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC (Game Pass day one; Premium Early Access is already open). Overall, if you’ve been waiting for The Coalition to swing back toward classic Gears, things are looking really good. Metacritic is sitting around an 87 across roughly 35 scored reviews (Generally Favorable), with early user scores near 8.5 — the highest modern Gears since the Gears of War 3 era (Gears 4 and 5 both landed around 84).
One big caveat up front: most of these scores are campaign-focused. Multiplayer often wasn’t in the review builds, so expect that Metacritic number to move once online modes get scored. Still, the consensus on the single-player side is loud — brutal cover shooting, a long campaign, and a prequel that feels like Gears at full strength.
- The Verge (Andrew Webster) — Confident, brutal cover shooter; “great game launching at a terrible time” for Xbox. Launch Oct 6.
theverge.com/games/1002768/gears-of-war-eday-review-xbox - Polygon (Ford James) — Gears at its finest despite one huge flaw; relentless 20+ hour campaign.
polygon.com/gears-of-war-eday-review/ - Eurogamer Germany — 100 — Campaign executed to perfection.
- MondoXbox — 95 — Strongest campaign / GOTY contender if multiplayer matches.
- IGN France — 90
- GamingBolt — 90
- Console Creatures — 90 — One of the best of the year.
- VGC — 80 — Gunplay great; story takes a back seat.
- Gamekult — Negative/mixed — Sluggish compared to Space Marine 2.
