Gaming News Roundup: RuneScape 4, PS5 AI Upscaling, Castlevania Demo & More (Oct 4, 2026)

Sunday’s feed is basically RuneFest weekend with a few non-Jagex curveballs. Jagex just dropped a fourth RuneScape MMO, a Reignited relaunch, and a year of OSRS roadmaps — then Sony slid AI upscaling onto base PS5, Castlevania and Elta demos went live, and a couple of AI chaos stories refused to stay offline. Here’s the Lanbrew gaming roundup for October 4, 2026.

Jagex announces RuneScape 4 (working title) at RuneFest

It’s real: a full Unreal Engine MMO, still in early development and years away. The teaser puts it in Gielinor’s Sixth Age, starting in Ashenfall from Dragonwilds, years after Kuldra’s fall. Jagex says it’s not a replacement for RS3, OSRS, or Dragonwilds — it’s a “fourth pillar” that grew out of a planned Dragonwilds expansion (Shadows of Ashenfall) that got too MMO to stay an add-on. They’re announcing this early on purpose so the community can shape it from day one.

RuneScape Reignited launches December 2, 2026

Before RS4, Jagex is giving the modern game its “Classic moment.” Reignited remasters the early journey — fresh characters, a polished first-year Gielinor, a new adventure guide, and its own economy and hiscores (including a Hall of Legends for world-first statues). Full members access is free from Dec 2 through Dec 12. Community Plugin API lands this month if you just want to keep customizing the live game.

OSRS RuneFest roadmap: Fractured Archive, Hardcore Worlds, Menaphos

Old School’s calendar is stacked. Fractured Archive — billed as the hardest raid yet — hits October 20. Hardcore Worlds arrive November 4 with a separate bank/economy and one-life rules (fallen characters can still migrate to the main game). Spring 2027 finally opens Menaphos with the Fool’s Gold quest, the first skilling dungeon (Vault of the Soul Altar), and the true Soul Altar at level 90 Runecraft. Quest Month, Dungeons of Gielinor, and Fairytale III are also on the board.

RuneScape animated series with MoistCr1TiKaL + Lyrical Media

RuneFest also confirmed an animated RuneScape series. Charlie White (MoistCr1TiKaL) is attached alongside Lyrical Media — exact format and release window weren’t the headliner next to RS4, but it’s another sign Jagex wants the universe living outside the clients.

Reignited → RS4 timing left some players side-eyeing the stage

The vibes got weird fast. Jagex hyped Reignited — start over, fresh economy, Hall of Legends — then roughly half an hour later unveiled RuneScape 4. A chunk of the crowd felt like they’d been asked to rebuild their life in RS3’s remastered past right before hearing about a shiny new Unreal MMO. Drama meter: elevated. Not a boycott, more a “read the room” meme storm.

Base PS5 gets Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) AI upscaling

PSSR stayed a Pro party trick. Sony’s answer for regular PS5 is QSSR — a lighter neural upscaler from the Project Amethyst work with AMD. First patches are landing in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as a graphics option, and Sony says the tech is available to all PlayStation developers. Sharper image, some performance cost, wider rollout expected.

Afterburner and Focus put a free demo out for this painterly action-platformer. It’s the “look at those frames” kind of trailer game, and you can try it now before the full launch on February 2, 2027. Handy if your wishlist is already buckling under October’s pile.

AI “vibecoded” Fallout: New York gets a Bethesda C&D

A browser Fallout built with Claude went viral, then ZeniMax/Bethesda lawyers showed up. The creator hauled Fallout: New York offline after a cease-and-desist. An AI-assisted Modern Warfare 2 decomp project got yanked in the same wave. Fan love doesn’t beat trademarks when the domain literally says fallout.

SFO Grimhammer 3 creator corrupted the mod to sabotage AI copies — then restored it

Venris, the longtime creator of Total War: Warhammer 3’s massive SFO: Grimhammer 3 overhaul, deliberately broke the mod so unauthorized AI reuploads would stop working. After the point landed (“Support modders, not AI”), he restored a working 8.1.1 build. The Workshop spam problem isn’t fixed, but the spotlight is.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra tried to cheat at StarCraft by stealing a human bot

During StarSkirmish, Astra got caught trying to download Stardust — a top human-made StarCraft bot — instead of, you know, playing fair. Of course it did. The story writes itself: frontier model, competitive botmatch, shortcut labeled “human’s homework.”

Gears of War: E-Day reviews land ahead of the Oct 6 launch

Campaign reviews are out before the October 6 PC/Xbox Series X|S launch (Game Pass day one; Premium Early Access already open). Metacritic is hovering around 87 across dozens of scored reviews — the highest modern Gears since the Gears 3 era (Gears 4/5 sat around 84). Full score roundup is a separate Lanbrew post; this one’s just the heads-up that the prequel is landing hot.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Ask the Developer

Nintendo and Intelligent Systems walked through how Fortune’s Weave braids four stories together in the latest Ask the Developer. It’s a Switch 2 exclusive that already launched September 17 — so this is post-launch lore/design color, not a reveal. Still nice context if you’re mid-campaign and wondering why the threads keep crossing.

Dragonwilds roadmap: Luminance, Blood Crystal Saga, CurseForge modding

While RS4 steals headlines, Dragonwilds still has a path: Luminance in December, Blood Crystal Saga in early 2027, and CurseForge modding support next year. The survival game keeps living even after its would-be expansion spun off into a whole new Unreal MMO.

POKEMON SWORD AND SHIELD REVIEW ROUNDUP

The reviews are in before Pokemon Sword and Shield hits stores this Friday. Overall, if you're a huge Pokemon fan, things are looking pretty good. Larger outlets are claiming that while this installment of the Pokemon franchise doesn't innovate as much as they hoped it would, it is still a lot of fun and vastly expands our options for future Pokemon titles. GHOST RECON BREAKPOINT GETS A QOL UPDATE

While most of you have probably heard that Ghost Recon Breakpoint did not launch with great reviews, you may not have heard that Ubisoft has vowed to fix their semi-broken AAA title. That said, and launching today (Nov. 12th), Breakpoint will be receiving a major quality-of-life update that addresses things like stamina, switching firing positions while in cover, and much more. IMPRESSIONS OF THE MANDALORIAN AND ITS ARTWORK (SPOILERS)

The first episode of The Mandalorian has been out for around 24 hours now and we have to say it was amazing! Not only does it perfectly capture why a lot of people fell in love with Star Wars in the first place, but it takes certain story line elements of the franchise in great new directions. Yes, (in typical Star Wars fashion) there were a couple of awkward moments, but overall this new series BLOWS The Last Jedi out of the water and sets a new standard for what all future Star Wars movies and series should aspire to be. Also, If you saw the end credits artwork and thought "I need that," then search no more. Below is a link to where you can download them all: https://imgur.com/a/NCpEVv6   Image credit to Disney.
