Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and, for the first time in over a decade, a Nintendo platform: Switch 2. Now that the full reviews are in, it's one of the best-reviewed Call of Duty games in years. Infinity Ward's finale to the rebooted Modern Warfare saga holds an 86 Metascore on PC and an 85 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, where 96% of critics recommend it.

Critics agree on three things: the campaign is the best the reboot has delivered, the new DMZ extraction mode is the surprise star, and the gunplay is as good as ever. The split is over traditional multiplayer. Most reviewers like the more grounded movement and the shifting Kill Block map, while IGN finds the new maps and modes dull. Killstreaks, a short campaign and Vault Edition perks in DMZ come up as the usual complaints.

What the Critics Are Saying

  • Windows Central (5/5): Infinity Ward "closes out the subseries with the explosive finale it deserves." – Windows Central
  • TechRadar Gaming (5/5): An "unmissable hit," with an emotional campaign, "incredible multiplayer" and a thrilling DMZ. – TechRadar Gaming
  • Game Rant (10/10): "The best Call of Duty since Black Ops 2," with a blockbuster campaign, "endlessly fun multiplayer" and a solid DMZ. – Game Rant
  • Destructoid (9/10): "It's good to see you again." A confident return to classic Modern Warfare. – Destructoid
  • Nintendo Life (9/10): Reviewed on Switch 2: "a bold, bombastic shooter" that runs very well on Nintendo hardware, day and date with other platforms. – Nintendo Life
  • GamesRadar+ (4.5/5): "A real return to form." GamesRadar+ loved the spectacular set pieces and DMZ's tight loop, but wasn't sold on parts of the Price storyline or on killstreaks. – GamesRadar+
  • COGconnected (88/100): Call of Duty doesn't always get the credit it deserves, but this one is "easy to recommend." – COGconnected

  • GamingTrend (87/100): "The series' most well-rounded experience," calling DMZ outstanding and saying "Infinity Ward has found their magic again." – GamingTrend
  • Game Informer (8.5/10): "A strong return to form" with thrilling multiplayer and "the definitive Call of Duty extraction shooter" in DMZ, though the story rushes some arcs and the campaign has frame rate and texture hiccups. – Game Informer
  • Press Start (8.5/10): It gets "the fundamentals so right," though matchmaking and map and spawn issues still need fixing. – Press Start
  • GameSpot (8/10): The full review (campaign, DMZ and multiplayer) calls DMZ the standout and the new Kill Block map "fresh and innovative." Downsides: brief final boss fights, only six DMZ story missions, DMZ no longer being free-to-play, and Vault Edition perks in DMZ. – GameSpot
  • IGN (review in progress): The campaign is "the best Modern Warfare has been since its 2019 reboot," but multiplayer is "quite a bit duller," with unimaginative new maps and modes and awkward spawns. A separate DMZ review says the mode makes "a great first impression." A final score is still to come. – IGN
  • PC Gamer (review in progress): After about 24 hours at a review event, PC Gamer calls DMZ a full extraction shooter that "wants you to succeed." A score is coming after launch. – PC Gamer

The consensus: Modern Warfare 4 is a return to form. It has a gripping, mostly linear campaign that wraps up Price's story, a DMZ mode big enough to stand on its own, and classic boots-on-the-ground multiplayer with better gunplay. It doesn't reinvent anything, and the multiplayer maps and modes divide critics a little. Still, if you skipped the last couple of entries, this is the one most reviewers say to come back for. IGN and PC Gamer haven't posted final scores yet, so the averages could still move. Looking for a deeper dive? Our own Lanbrew campaign review went up on October 20.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE MANDALORIAN AND ITS ARTWORK (SPOILERS)

The first episode of The Mandalorian has been out for around 24 hours now and we have to say it was amazing! Not only does it perfectly capture why a lot of people fell in love with Star Wars in the first place, but it takes certain story line elements of the franchise in great new directions. Yes, (in typical Star Wars fashion) there were a couple of awkward moments, but overall this new series BLOWS The Last Jedi out of the water and sets a new standard for what all future Star Wars movies and series should aspire to be. Also, If you saw the end credits artwork and thought "I need that," then search no more. Below is a link to where you can download them all: https://imgur.com/a/NCpEVv6   Image credit to Disney.
